About Us

The Word Arts Foundation (WAF) was formed in Athens, Ohio, to support writers and spoken word performers of the Southeast Ohio region. Southeast Ohio has a rich heritage of the arts, from the artist colonies in the Hocking Hills region, to the art galleries in Nelsonville, to the thriving live music scene in Athens. Our board is comprised of authors, performance poets, and leaders of our community’s grassroots literary sphere. We feel that this region should also be known for its writers and spoken word artists.

WAF proposes to provide financial assistance for regional word artists to apply for grants, hold and attend showcase events, and create educational programs. Our support for writers forms three legs of a stool that enables them to reach higher. Artists will gain knowledge by attending workshops and conferences. Secondly, they will gain exposure and experience by entering contests, performances and readings. Most importantly, writers supported by the WAF will share wisdom by leading workshops and classes. Our efforts will offer writers a support network that will aid in the growth of their talents.

In April, WAF will be promoting the first of two annual events: Dancing Words: A Festival of Written and Spoken Words. This festival is an opportunity for regional writers to network and gain exposure and experience, and for the community to enjoy the talented writers and performers from the region and around the country. This is also a fund-raising opportunity for WAF.

Beginning in May, WAF will begin to disburse monies to interested writers. Our first round of grants will cover fees for writing contests, which help writers gain exposure, pedigree, and recognition. The WAF understands that workshops and conferences develop writing skills and encourage artists to connect with other writers, promoters, and publishers. The fees for participating in these opportunities can be a burden on struggling writers, and as the funds become available, WAF will offer grants will help offset these expenses.

This fall, the WAF will inaugurate its other annual event, which will be a series of contest to recognize outstanding regional writers. Beginning with the 2008-09 school year, WAF also plans to initiate a writers-in-residence program to position regional writers as advisors and workshop leaders for middle and high school language arts classes.

In the future, the Foundation will sponsor readings and performances at libraries, schools, and other public venues.

WAF will benefit Southeast Ohio in its support of the region’s creative and artistic talent. These goals are only a beginning, and stand to be built upon. Your tax-deductible donation will help these goals become a reality.
